An order can fail for several reasons before it reaches an executable state. The MT4 message and the journal entry recorded at the same time are the best places to start identifying the cause.
Common reasons
- No current price: the market may be closed, the instrument may be suspended, or no valid quote may be available.
- Price changed: during a fast market, the requested price may no longer be available.
- Insufficient free margin: the account may not have enough free margin for the requested volume.
- Invalid trade volume: the volume may be below the minimum, above the maximum, or outside the permitted volume step.
- Invalid Stop Loss or Take Profit: an attached level may be too close to the market price or on the wrong side of the price.
- Trading restriction: the instrument, account or market session may not permit that order at the time.
- Connection issue: MT4 may have disconnected from the assigned server.
What to check
- Read the complete message shown in the order window.
- Open Terminal → Journal and find the entry recorded at the same time.
- Confirm that live prices are updating and the connection indicator is active.
- Check the instrument’s trading hours, minimum volume and volume step.
- Review your free margin and reduce the volume where appropriate.
- Remove or correct an invalid Stop Loss or Take Profit, and resubmit only if the order still fits your trading plan.
If the issue continues
